Betsy Kay McChain (Schwanke), 73, of Milwaukee, WI, peacefully passed away on May 24, 2023.
Betsy is predeceased by her parents and her husband, David. She is survived by her children, Megan (Matthew) Olson and Andrew (Anna) McChain; her grandchildren, Callum, Gus, Vivienne, Lois, and Joy; her sisters, Patti (Jack) Marcy and Mary Jo (Mike) Johnson; and brother, John (Teddy) Schwanke.
Betsy was born on March 5, 1950, to Vilas and Antoinette Schwanke. After graduating from UW-Stevens Point, she spent her career helping others as a social worker for Milwaukee County. In 1981, she married David McChain, having two children, Megan and Andrew. She spent the last decade being a proud Oma to her grandchildren.
Betsy was an avid hiker, biker, currach rower, and true friend collector. She knew how to cultivate a strong community, one that took special care of her these past few months. Betsy was a generous individual who helped others as often as she could, and was passionate about caring for the Earth. She also dedicated her time to volunteering for Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the Urban Ecology Center, and many nursing homes over the years.
A memorial celebration will be held on June 8, 2023, at South Shore Park Pavilion, 2900 S Shore Dr, Milwaukee. Dinner and visitation are to begin at 5:00 PM, with a short program at 6:30 PM. If you are willing and able, please bring a dish to pass and dress in your favorite floral pattern. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Urban Ecology Center.
