Passed away Sunday (March 10, 2019) at age 95 surrounded by family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
She was born on January 22, 1924, in Springfield, Illinois, to Vera Holzman Curtis and Edward Monroe Curtis. Mary Ann spent her childhood in Kankakee and graduated from high school at Steven’s College in Columbia, MO. After graduation, she continued her studies at the University of Miami before moving to San Francisco where she worked with the American Red Cross during World War II. She later worked at Kankakee Investment Company and volunteered at the Red Cross and Harbor House. She also obtained her Associate’s Degree from Kankakee Community College later in life.
Mary Ann was a voracious reader. For the family book exchange, it was a challenge to find a single book she had not read. She had an inquisitive mind, and even as an octogenarian, she was an active user of computers and the internet. Mary Ann loved to travel the country and the world but spent her happiest autumns reading in the woods of Northern Wisconsin. She also loved animals and was a passionate supporter of the Humane Society.
Mary Ann was a doting mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who rarely missed a graduation, recital, concert, or play.
She was married to Albert Reed Rossi for 50 years. He preceded her in death in 1997. She is also preceded in death by her parents and her many adored pets. She is survived by her devoted daughter Kathleen Rossi Alpren, her son-in-law Thomas V.P. Alpren of Shorewood, WI, and her brother Edward C. Curtis of Hollywood, Fl. She was the loving grandmother of Jacob (Angela Yuan), Daniel and Emily (Ben Nedivi), and the proud great-grandmother of Amelia, Simon, Hazel and Barbara Frances Eleanor.
Memorials may be made to the Kankakee County Humane Foundation or Harbor House of Kankakee.
